| Project Background/Rationale |
The Government of the Philippines declared its firm commitment to judicial reform in order to address the public perception of a slow and elitist dispensation of justice in the MTDP 2001-2004. The Supreme Court of the Philippines is implementing a comprehensive judicial reform (2001 2006) the Action Programme for Judicial Reform (APJR) financed by the GoP and a series of donors. The APJR has six components: Judicial Systems Development, Institutions Development, Human Resource Development, Reform Support Systems Development (this includes the information and communication function of the Court), Institutional integrity development and Access to justice for the poor. The present project was consulted with a wide range of governmental, judicial Supreme Court- and civil society institutions, the direct beneficiaries as represented by selected barangays as well as EU Member States and other donors. |
| Project Objective |
To improve access to justice for the poor by increasing their knowledge about basic rights and the judicial system, and through the creation of an enabling, supportive environment to this effect within the Barangay Justice System (BJS), the Judiciary, and the Police. |
